GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester GPA from course credit hours and grade points.

How it's calculated

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average, not a simple average of grade points. Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, those totals are summed, and the sum is divided by the total credit hours: GPA = (Σ credit hours × grade points) ÷ Σ credit hours A 4-credit course pulls your GPA further than a 1-credit course, even with the same grade — that's why credit hours matter as much as the grade itself.

Worked example

Say you took three courses in a semester: - Course A: 3 credit hours, grade points 3.7 - Course B: 4 credit hours, grade points 3.0 - Course C: 2 credit hours, grade points 4.0 Quality points: (3 × 3.7) + (4 × 3.0) + (2 × 4.0) = 11.1 + 12.0 + 8.0 = 31.1 Total credit hours: 3 + 4 + 2 = 9 GPA = 31.1 ÷ 9 = 3.46

Frequently asked questions

What GPA scale does this calculator use?
A standard 0-4.0 scale. If your institution uses a different scale (e.g. 0-5.0), convert your grade points to the 0-4.0 equivalent before entering them.
Does a failed course still count toward GPA?
Yes, if your institution assigns it grade points (often 0.0) and counts its credit hours — include it the same way as any other course.
What's the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA covers a single semester or term. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) aggregates GPA across every semester you've completed — use our CGPA Calculator for that.
